Director of National Marine Facilities at the National Oceanography Centre

Based at: Southampton

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) is looking to fill a key leadership role - providing the ships, technology, data, facilities and equipment that make the UK a world leader in marine science.

About the role:
As NOC’s Director of National Marine Facilities you will be responsible for strategic management and innovation in delivering research infrastructure to the UK marine science community, providing a user-focused, high quality and cost-effective service to a diverse range of universities and research institutes - as well as to NOC itself - on behalf of the centre’s owner, the Natural Environment Research Council.

National Marine Facilities provide two deep ocean Royal Research Ships, James Cook and Discovery; the Marine Autonomous and Robotics Systems (MARS) facility, the National Marine Equipment Pool, the British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility and the British Oceanographic Data Centre.  Whilst most of this research infrastructure is managed by NOC, some is also delivered under contract (https://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20130701142459/http://noc.ac.uk/research-at-sea/nmfss)

This post will be offered as an open-ended position.

Salary:
£77,645.00 circa.

About you:
You will have an established reputation for strategic leadership and management in delivering a high quality service within a research environment and will rapidly establish credibility within the UK scientific community and internationally. With an annual operating budget in excess of £20 million and more than 200 specialist staff, you will have superb financial, people-management and communication skills, as well as an enabling style to motivate a diverse range of professionals.  You will have experience of working in a complex stakeholder environment, developing and maintaining effective relationships and strategic partnerships to support the aims of an ambitious science community.
